"The Butterfly Loose-Change Project"

The students of Martin Avenue Elementary School in Bellmore need your help and support.  Many of you may have helped us in the past with our "Million Penny Project" by collecting pennies for nearly three years.  Our combined efforts resulted in more than a $10,000 donation to 1 in 9 - Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition and Hewlett House.  Together we made a difference in the lives of those patients and families dealing with breast cancer.

This time, we are hoping to help the Guardian Brain Foundation.  Their goal is to help improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with brain cancer and other brain injuries and diseases.  Did you know that over 20,500 people will be diagnosed with malignant brain tumors this year?  In addition Millions will be afflicted with debilitating brain diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, depression, and stroke.  Another million will have traumatic brain injuries due to falls, accidents and military combat.  It is almost too incredible to conceive!  One of these statistics became a reality for us here at Martin Avenue Elementary School.  When our community lost our first- grade student, Erin Getzler, last March to brain cancer.

As a result of the loss of Erin, our student council, MACC (Martin Avenue Cares Council) and the entire Martin Avenue community are embarking on a charitable mission in an effort to support the Guardian Brain Foundation and to keep Erin's memory alive.  We are calling our project "The Butterfly Loose-Change Project" which started this week and will end in June of 2008.  We are writing to ask for your help in making our mission a success by joining us in our efforts.  Here are some of the simple steps to help you in your endeavors.

Students of MACC will be giving you a bucket to place on your countertop.  Our hope is that as your customers do business with you (especially with the holidays nearing), they will see this bucket and have an opportunity to donate or our cause by placing their loose-change in the bucket rather than back into their pocket.  In addition, the students and parents have created beautiful display butterflies, which we welcome you to hang in your storefront windows.  This will showcase to the community your commitment to this project's success.  People will begin to "look for the butterfly in the window" as they shop in town.

We are happy to be a part of this worthy cause, and hope you, too, will embrace the project with equal passion.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.  We look forward to meeting with you personally as we walk through town distributing buckets and butterflies We also look forward to the jingle of clinking coins.

Sincerely,
Toni Simpson - President of M.A.C.C.
Nadine Simpson - Vice President M.A.C.C.
Sue Kahn Wolk - Faculty Advisor
